Suspect questioned after police officer shot

September 12, 2010 (CHICAGO) The officer was shot in the 7400-block of South South Shore Drive Saturday. He and his partner tried to resolve a disturbance following a car crash there.

That's when a man shot at him, striking him in the vest and shoulder before running off.

Chicago police say the man had carjacked a Saturn. The suspect was arrested early Sunday at a bar in Chicago Heights.

"Gang enforcement officers, with the assistance of the Chicago Heights Police Department, located the suspect inside the bar and placed him into custody without incident. He is currently being interviewed by Area 2 detectives and charges are pending," Chicago Police Dept. Supt. Jody Weis said.

The 43-year-old officer was struck once in the vest and once in the shoulder. He was hospitalized briefly but was recovering at home Sunday night.

Following the shooting Saturday, Chicago police officers were seen combing the South Shore neighborhood with automatic weapons, looking for the man who they believe shot at two of their officers during what Superintendent Jody Weis called a routine stop.

"It just shows how even the most routine incident can turn into a deadly encounter. Fortunately, for this one, the officer's vest worked," said Weis.
