Ninety-thousand people have reportedly signed an online petition calling for a new barrier on the Chicago canal system to keep the Asian carp out of the Great Lakes.

Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox said the petition has been delivered to the new Asian carp czar who was appointed by the White House.

Cox is heading a legal battle to build the barrier. He is backed by the attorneys general of Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Minnesota.

The barrier could take years to build. In the meantime, the states have asked a federal judge to close two Chicago locks to create a temporary barrier.
