Stroger defends zoo party for flood victims

September 17, 2010 (CHICAGO)

This week the ABC7 I-Team reported that federal disaster grant money was used to pay for a weekend party at the Brookfield Zoo. People who applied for help with damage from the 2008 flood enjoyed dancing, a DJ and a catered lunch.

Some flood victims say they're upset about the zoo party because they haven't received any grant help yet. President Stroger stands by the event.

"It wasn't spent just to have a day at the zoo. It was spent to get people in one spot where they can have health services, find out about the disaster grant. It was there to be something that could help people," said Stroger.

While the total cost isn't available yet, the county says 2,200 people attended the event.
