The intersection of Interstates 57 and 294 is one of only two places nationwide where interstate highways cross without connecting.
The first step toward building a full interchange at the site is to replace the I-57 overpass.
Once completed, the new overpass is expected to reduce travel times and create hundreds of jobs.
Plans for constructing the full interchange are awaiting federal approval.
The project is expected to start in the fall and major construction begins in the spring.
