Scientists identify protein to gauge Alzheimer's

Researchers have discovered a promising new approach for people who have Alzheimer's or will develop the disease someday. They have zeroed in on a protein called tau which seems to signal how aggressive the mind-robbing disease will be.

Researchers discovered that patients with mild Alzheimer's and high levels of tau also harbored a genetic alteration that in turn predicted they would deteriorate more quickly than others. They say if scientists can figure out how to lower tau level, it might also slow the progress of dementia.
