A lifestyle intervention may help overweight people control their type 2 diabetes and lower their risk of cardiovascular disease.

A study reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine compared two groups.

Half took part in three educational and support sessions each year.

The other group received an intensive lifestyle intervention that included a specialized exercise and diet program along with monthly meetings.

At the end of the 4-year study, the group in the intensive intervention program had lost more weight.

They also saw greater improvements in their blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol.
