Activists rally to end domestic violence

October 1, 2010 (CHICAGO)

Governor Quinn joined church and community leaders to call for an end to domestic violence and urge victims to seek help.

According to the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence, about 300,000 women and children experience violence in their homes each year and there have been 54 fatalities since January 1, 2009.

"What we are doing today is standing up for those 54 women and children who were silenced by domestic abuse," said Jennifer Welch, Chicago Dept. of Family and Support Services.

Governor Quinn also signed two bills into law that are meant to further protect the privacy of rape and sexual assault victims.
