Chicago police say overall crime fell 4.5 percent for the month of September, and according to the department, crime has fallen for 21 consecutive months.

Police say murders dropped 2.3 percent in September, after an increase in August. Through the end of September, there have been 343 reported murders in Chicago. That's eight fewer than at the same time last year.

The police department says the city is on pace with 2007, a year that ended with the lowest number of murders since 1965.
