The best coat for your body type

October 8, 2010

A good winter coat is often one of our higher-ticket wardrobe expenditures so you will want to find one that's not only enduringly stylish-- but that flatters your figure.

There's a great selection of coats from Woodfield Mall stores, covering just about any body type.

(1)Barb in Talbots
The classic "camel coat" is back in a big way this season!
Styling is good for a pear-shaped figure (carries weight in hips).
Large, open collar draws eyes upward while the coat skims the rest of the body.
The straight line of buttons helps create a slimming silhouette by leading the eye down past the hips.
Coat: $299

(2) Maria in White House, Black Market
High-collar Topper
To better fit a curvy figure, we've left the collar open, showing a little neck.
Triple princess seams naturally follow the curve of the figure.
To emphasize the waist and to give the coat a little pop, she's replaced the coat belt with a red and black belt.
Replacing belts or adding accessories are a great way to update your classic coat from year to year.
Coat: $228

(3) Brigid in White House Black Market
Modern Plaid Ruffle Coat
Great coat for a "less curvy" figure.
Large ruffled collar and belted waist create curves.
Ruffles and plaid are very hot this year.
Black striped metallic scarf and red leather gloves add sparkle and a pop of color.
Coat: $188
Scarf: $48
Gloves: $68
Total: $304

(4) Bernette in Eddie Bauer
Sundown Express Down Jacket
This coat will flatter apple-shaped figure (carries weight in mid-section).
Faux-fur lined hood is both on-trend and draws the eye up.
Diagonal stiching emphasizes the waist line.
The zippered pockets lie flat so there's no extra bulk around the middle.
Coat: $179

(5) Alka in Ann Taylor
Modern luxe coat in classic camel – season's number-one coat trend!
For the petite women, coat length is particularly important.
Length should never be more than three-quarters of the leg, ending just above the knee is best for creating a longer silhouette.
Double-breasted front closure and wide notch lapels complete the classic look.
Coat: $398

(6) Jennifer in Torrid
Gray is another big coat color this season (along with camel and black).
Princess seaming flatters a fuller figure.
Belt emphasizes waist to create an hourglass figure.
Shorter coat length makes the legs look longer.
Open collar and buttons on front and sleeves provide interest.
Coat: $128
