The Department of Defense announced Tuesday the death of Lance Corporal John Sparks. The 23-year-old died last Friday by small-arms fire while conducting combat operations.
Sparks was assigned to the Marine expeditionary force out of Camp Pendleton, California. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in February of 2008. This was his first combat deployment.
Sparks earned several service awards including the Purple Heart.
