Firefighter hurt, 12 homeless after West Side fires

A Chicago firefighter is reportedly in good condition after being hit by flying debris while on the scene of a fire in the Austin neighborhood.

The fire started in an abandoned house Friday night in the 500-block of North Lawler. It spread to another home, displacing nine people.

Meanwhile, another fire in the Austin neighborhood left 12 people homeless. It happened at a three-story brick apartment building on North Mason Avenue. One person suffered minor smoke inhalation and was taken to a hospital. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
