It happened near 59th Street and Western Avenue.
Officers were trying to stop a driver believed to be taking part in a drug transaction. They say the driver took off, dragging a police officer for nearly a block.
An officer in fear of his life fired his weapon, killing the driver.
Police say drugs were recovered at the scene.
The officer sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries.
