About two dozen veterans participated in Friday's event held at Leo High School in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood on the South Side.
The veterans served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm and the Iraq war.
The service took place in the school's war memorial courtyard. School officials called it a history lesson of utmost significance.
