Illinois soldier killed in Afghanistan

The Department of Defense says a soldier with ties to the southwest suburbs has been killed in Afghanistan.

Twenty-five-year-old Specialist James Young died Wednesday in Kandahar province. Insurgents attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device.

Young was from downstate Rochester and was assigned to the 863rd Engineer Battalion in Darien.
