Mattie Lee Fletcher, 72, was killed. Her husband, Joe, 71, was taken to Bernard Hospital in serious condition.
The flames began around 1:30 p.m. and spread quickly. Mattie was trapped by the fire in the front room, officials said. She was unable to get out.
"She was a loving mother. She cared about all of us. We have been here 3 a years, so my mom was like a mom to all of my neighbors. My mom raised us and cared about us more than hers," said the Fletchers' daughter.
Fletcher had five children- two of whom were home at the time of the fire. They were able to escape from the flames and refused treatment at the scene when fire crews arrived.
The 1 and a-half story bungalow was heavily damaged. Officials have not determined the cause of the fire.
