Federal prosecutors say they want convicted Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge to serve at least 24 years in prison after he was convicted last summer of perjury and obstruction of justice.

He and officers under his command have been accused of torturing suspects in police custody.

Prosecutors say the long prison sentence is warranted because Burge left a stain on the Chicago Police Department and cost taxpayers millions of dollars in settlement costs.

The probation office recently recommended a 15-to-21 month sentence for Burge. He will be sentenced in January.
