Antibiotics to treat ear infection? Matter of disupute

When a child gets a prescription, it's usually for an ear infection, but whether antibiotics should be used for this common problem is a matter of dispute.

A review of studies in the Journal of the American Medical Association finds that early used of antibiotics had only modest benefit.

Most children tend to get better without them, but the medication does speed recovery.

On the down side, antibiotics can have side effects including diarrhea and rash, which could make a child feel worse.

The study also finds the traditional amoxicillin is preferred to the more expensive alternative.
