White House senior advisor David Axelrod will be leaving Washington earlier than expected to prepare for the president's 2012 re-election campaign.

Axelrod was expected to leave the White House in spring 2011, but ABC News has learned that will now happen in late January or early February.

A White House source says Axelrod wanted to have time to rest and enjoy time with his family before the re-election campaign kicks into high gear.
