We've heard that visceral fat increases the risk of heart disease and diabetes, but a new study suggests it also ups a woman risk of developing osteoporosis.

Extra weight was previously believed to somewhat protect against bone loss.

Experts say this stomach fat releases fatty acids into the liver, and it also releases other substances and hormones that have an effect on the heart and the pancreas, and also probably on the bones.

The study was presented at the Radiological Society of North American meeting in Chicago.
