Defense Secretary Robert Gates awarded a Silver Star to Army First Lieutenant Stephen Tangen of Naperville. Lieutenant Tangen is a 2004 graduate of Naperville North High, where he was in the National Honor Society, swim team captain, and member of the water polo team.
Secretary Gates, who was visiting in Afghanistan, also honored Army Private First Class Richard Bennett of St. Charles with a Silver Star.
