Former U.S. Senator Roland Burris says he will not be on the February ballot for Chicago mayor.

Burris issued a statement Friday saying he is withdrawing his name from the race.

Supporters filed a nominating petition in an effort to get his name on the ballot.

Burris says he thanks those supporters who signed the petition but gave no reason for why he is withdrawing his name.

Last month, in an interview with ABC7, Burris wouldn't rule out a run for mayor.

"I've always said there's no one better qualified than me to be mayor," he said.
