The victim has been identified as John Washington.
The teen was shot in the stomach about a mile away from his home in the 900-block of North Harding on the city's West Side.
Washington died at Stroger Hospital.
No one is in custody in connection with the shooting.
Washington was a freshman at Clemente High School. His uncle describes him as a good kid who loved basketball. He believes his nephew was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Police are urging anyone with information on the shooting to come forward.
