Thursday is the fifth day of Kwanzaa, the African-American festival of ''first fruits.''

The celebration at Malcolm X College features a trio of drummers who lead guests into the auditorium.

Then they light the traditional candle holder called the kinara, and they discuss the day's principle.

The principle of day five is "purpose."

It's intended to emphasize the importance of raising children with the skills they need to be productive citizens.
