CPS attorneys: District handled layoffs properly

A court battle is under way over layoffs involving more than 700 tenured Chicago public school teachers.

Attorneys for Chicago Public Schools presented their arguments Friday in their appeal of a ruling that the district mishandled the layoffs. They say CPS followed proper rules approved by state lawmakers.

An attorney for the teachers union disagrees and says the way teachers were terminated effectively barred many experienced, quality teachers from applying for new job openings in the district.

A three-judge panel is hearing the case.
