A funeral service was held Friday for Chicago's first African-American police superintendent.

Fred Rice died Monday at the age of 84.

Visitation and the funeral were held Friday morning at Holy Name Cathedral.

Mayor Daley and current Superintendent Jody Weis attended, along with officers from many departments.

In 1983, Mayor Harold Washington appointed rice as superintendent. He held that job for four years but served the police department for 32 years.

Family members say Rice had battled lung cancer in recent years.
