A Roman Catholic Church deacon was sentenced to six years in prison for stealing more than $300,000 from his parish.

Prosecutors say George Valdez wrote duplicate checks to himself and used the St. Mary's church credit card for personal items like dinners hotel rooms and tickets to sporting event. He was the church's business manager at the time.

Investigators say the scheme was discovered after a routine audit was conducted.
