Chicagoans voted to elect new aldermen or re-elect current aldermen in the city's 50 wards on Tuesday.

Seven aldermen ran unopposed. That left 43 contested ward elections with a total of 239 candidates vying to sit in the Chicago City Council.

In general, incumbent aldermen led the voting Tuesday. Like the mayoral candidates, they also need to reach the 50 percent plus one vote threshold to avoid a runoff.

A total of at least 14 runoffs will take place in April. That includes ten incumbents with three wards still on the bubble.

On the South Side in the 7th Ward, which includes South Shore and Calumet Heights, Sandi Jackson, wife of Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr., avoided a runoff by beating former alderman Darcel Beavers, daughter of County Board Commissioner William Beavers.

In the 20th Ward, also on the South Side, incumbent alderman Willie Cochran did not avoid a runoff. The retired cop will face a runoff against hip-hop artist Che "Rhymefest" Smith. The ward includes Englewood, Woodlawn and Back of the Yards.

On the West Side in the 25th Ward, which includes Pilsen, Chinatown, Little Italy and the UIC campus, incumbent alderman Danny Solis did not cross the 50 percent threshold. He'll be facing Cuahutemoc Morfin, a community activist.

The race in the 24th Ward, which includes Garfield Park and North Lawndale on the West Side, had 18 candidates crowding the ballot. Incumbent Sharon Dixon will face former alderman Michael Chandler, who gets a rematch. He lost to Dixon in 2007.

On the Far North Side 50th Ward, which includes portions of Rogers Park, incumbent Bernard Stone got just 37 percent of the vote and will face Debra Silverstein. Silverstein is a CPA and is the wife of State Senator Ira Silverstein. Debra Silverstein received 33 percent of the vote. Ira Silverstein took the ward committeeman job away from Stone. Stone is the oldest member of the council at 83.
