Team faces tournament game without fallen teammate

FENNVILLE, Mich. (AP) - Fennville High School's basketball team faces an emotional game tonight as it begins the state tournament. It will be their first game without Wes Leonard. The tournament game comes just one day after mourners gathered for the wake of the 16-year-old who collapsed on the court and later died. WWMT-TV reports a line of people who wanted to pay their respects wrapped around Fennville United Methodist Church on Sunday. The station says the wait at one point was 45 minutes to enter the visitation A funeral is set for Tuesday at Christ Memorial Church in Holland. Leonard scored the game-winning basket in a 57-55 overtime win over Bridgman to cap Fennville's 20-0 season. He fell to the ground during a post-game celebration.

GOOD SAMARITAN KILLED
Mich. man killed after stopping to help motorist

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - A 55-year-old Grand Rapids man who stopped to help a stranded motorist was struck and killed. Police say Daniel Haynes was going to use his truck to help pull out the motorist's vehicle, which was stuck in the snow Saturday night. The Grand Rapids Press reports a 21-year-old Grand Rapids man lost control of his vehicle and hit the front of Haynes' truck, pinning him between his truck and the stranded vehicle. Police say witnesses tried to help Haynes before authorities arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after. Authorities described the roads as extremely slippery at the time due to falling snow and ice. No traffic citations had been issued, and the investigation was ongoing.

OBIT-SHINGLETON
Former Michigan St. administrator Shingleton dies

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Former Michigan State University administrator and trustee Jack Shingleton has died. He was 89. The East Lansing school says Shingleton died Wednesday. A memorial service is set for Monday at the Alumni Chapel. Shingleton was Michigan State's director of placement for 24 years. In that position, he built a job placement program that was considered one of the nation's most innovative. His son, Bradford, tells the Lansing State Journal his father wanted students to have "a work perspective to balance the liberal arts education." Shingleton also had a brief stint as acting athletic director in the 1970s. He retired from the school in 1987. He once told the Lansing State Journal he'd always "had a love affair" with Michigan State. Born in Wyandotte, Shingleton was a World War II pilot.

AUTO PLANT REOPENING
GM plant in Ohio to reopen after 5-day shutdown

LORDSTOWN, Ohio (AP) - Work will resume at a General Motors plant in northeast Ohio on Tuesday following last week's shutdown caused by a fire at an auto parts plant in Michigan. Tom Mock of General Motors Co. says shifts will begin at the Lordstown plant near Youngstown after significant progress has been made by Magna International Inc., whose interior parts plant near Howell, Mich., caught fire Wednesday. The fire burned about 25 percent of the factory space and two large holes in the roof and forced GM and Mazda Motor Corp. both to stop making cars at some plants. The Lordstown plant makes the popular Chevrolet Cruze small car.

Monroe County police bust up dog fighting ring

RAISINVILLE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities in Monroe County say they busted up a dog fighting ring being held in a garage. Police call it a high-dollar and bloody operation that attracted participants from various states. Around two-dozen people were arrested and two of the five dogs seized Saturday night were severely injured and might have to be put down. Sheriff's Detective Sgt. Heath Velliquette tells The Monroe Evening News "it was brutal" and "there was blood everywhere." Members of the county's Special Response Team raided the garage about 10 p.m. just after a fight between two dogs had ended. The operation was held in a two-car garage in Raisinville Township. A full-sized dog fighting ring was constructed inside. Sheriff's deputies and the SRT acted on a tip from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

70 flights of stairs climbed for charity in Mich.

DETROIT (AP) - About 700 people climbed 70 flights of stairs inside Detroit's Renaissance Center to raise money for the American Lung Association. Organizers say more than $140,000 was raised at the fifth annual Fight For Air Climb on Sunday. David Cooney of Brighton was among the climbers. He received a double lung transplant in 2009 after being diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, a fatal lung disease that claimed the life of his twin brother six years ago. Cooney spoke to The Detroit News from the 70th floor of the Renaissance Center moments after finishing the climb. He told the paper his "lungs were great," but his legs are 56 years old.

POWERBALL-MICHIGAN
No tickets in Michigan win big Powerball prize

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - No top-prize tickets were sold in Michigan for the $25 million Powerball drawing. Saturday's Powerball numbers were: two, 23, 31, 42 and 48. The Powerball was 21, and the Power Play was two. One ticket sold in Michigan won $10,000. The next Powerball drawing will be on Wednesday, when the big prize will be worth $40 million.
