An Indiana veteran has been awarded the Purple Heart more than 50 years after returning from active duty.

This week, Retired Marine Officer Arthur Welch, of Muncie, was given the medal for his act of bravery during the Korean War.

Welch was wounded by shrapnel during a gun battle on the side of a hill that provided no cover.

The 80-year-old only recently learned he was eligible for the Purple Heart while applying for medical benefits through Veterans Affairs.
