Report: New guidelines needed to diagnose kids' illness

Heart and breathing guidelines that help doctors diagnose illness may be missing children who are sick.

How rapidly a child is breathing and the speed of their heart are important tools for diagnosing a problem. A review in The Lancet Medical Journal says current healthy ranges may not be accurate. The authors produced new charts and compared them with current guidelines.

The findings suggest children with fast heart rates are not being picked up and some are being diagnosed with a fast rate when they're normal.

The report says updated guidelines are needed.
