Coyotes howling with ambulances near hospital

People who live near Chicago's Swedish Covenant Hospital are probably used to the sounds of ambulances sirens. Now they're getting used to the howling of coyotes.

In a posting on his website, Alderman Patrick O'Connor says many residents near the hospital have reported seeing coyotes.

Residents have also reported hearing what sounds like a chorus of them howling in response to ambulance sirens.

Coyotes vanished from the Chicago area by the end of the 19th century. They have made a comeback in recent years.

Because the city of Chicago does not trap or "disable" coyotes, the alderman is encouraging residents to be cautious should they encounter one.
