A family in northwest suburban Lakemoor says a nurse let their 11-year-old daughter take a syringe and needle home from the hospital.

Maggie Kaufman and her mother were visiting a friend at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville on Friday. Kaufman's mother says she saw the nurse let the girl handle a syringe and the IV monitor. But Lorrie Kaufman says she didn't realize the nurse allowed the girl to pick out a needle to take home until they left the hospital.

"Usually you give a kid a sucker or a sticker. You don't give them needles," said Lorrie Kaufman.

"I didn't know that needles are bad and you shouldn't play with them," said Maggie Kaufman.

The hospital says it deeply regrets the incident. The nurse has been suspended pending an investigation.
