A 40-year data analysis in 15 countries found that being unemployed increases a person's risk of premature death by 63 percent.

Unemployment boosts men's risk of premature death much more than it does women's risk ? 78 percent versus 37 percent.

The study in the journal Science and Medicine found the risk of death is particularly high for people younger than 50.

Authors call their findings about unemployment and death risk "groundbreaking information."
