A former Chicago police officer who was once a member of an elite unit in the department has pleaded guilty to murder-for-hire charges.

In federal court Tuesday Jerome Finnigan admitted to hiring a hit man to kill a fellow officer who was planning to testify against him.

In 2006, Finnigan and five other officers of the now defunct Special Operations Section were arrested for stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash from suspected drug dealers.

Finnigan will be sentenced August 11. He faces up to 13 years in prison.
