Mayor Richard Daley marked Arbor Day by helping plant a tree and saying he has tried to make Chicago the world's most environmentally friendly city.

The tree planting was held at Northside College Prep High School.

Daley said he is proud that while he has been mayor, Chicago has planted more than 600,000 trees.

He stressed that urban areas can and must protect the environment.

He attended the tree planting as part of his farewell tour of the city.

Daley will retire as mayor in less than three weeks.
