Need an eye exam? There's an app for that

A new smartphone app allows patients to administer different tests, such as reading a digital eye chart or snapping high resolution pictures of their eyes.

The results are then sent to the patient's doctor, who can check for vision problems or external diseases, such as corneal ulcers.

Some experts call the smartphone app a useful screening and diagnostic tool. Others say it is no substitute for a thorough exam by an ophthalmologist.
