Northwestern Memorial Hospital and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago say they are testing embryonic stem cells in a spinal cord injury patient.

This is the second patient enrolled in the national study, which is looking at the safety of the cells being developed by Geron Corporation.

Ultimately, researchers are hoping stem cells can regenerate damaged spinal cords, but an answer to that is years away.
