Tinley Park Police Chief O'Connell dies at 60

According to the release, Chief Michael O'Connell passed away Wednesday morning at Ingalls Hospital. He was 60 years old.

"This is a devastating loss to his family, his many friends, the law enforcement profession and our entire community," Tinley Park Mayor Ed Zabrocki said in the release. "We will miss him immensely, as a chief and as a friend."

Village officials say O'Connell's law enforcement career spanned 39 years. He was appointed as Tinley Park police chief in 1995.

O'Connell is survived by his wife, two daughters, son, son-in-law, daughter-in-law and four grandchildren.

A visitation is scheduled Sunday, May 15 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Brady-Gill Funeral Home, which is located at 16600 S. Oak Park Ave. in Tinley Park, according to the release. A funeral Mass will take place Monday, May 16 at St. Stephen Deacon and Martyr Church at 17500 84th Ave. in Tinley Park at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at 262 Danny Thomas Place in Memphis, Tennessee 38105. Donations can be made over the telephone by calling 1-800-805-5856.
