American Rivers is adding the Chicago River to its annual list of threatened waterways to people and wildlife.
Last week, the EPA ordered Illinois officials to adopt more stringent water-quality standards to make stretches of the Chicago River, Cal-Sag Channel and Little Calumet River safer for recreation.
The cleanup is estimated to cost $72 million for new germ-killing equipment and another $355 million for deep tunnel sewer pipes to store waste and storm runoff.
