For Your Family: Watch Out for Ticks

May 23, 2011 (CHICAGO)

Dr. James McAuley, an infectious disease expert at Rush University Medical Center, visited ABC7 to share tips.

The two most common types of ticks are the dog tick and the deer tick. Mcauley says the deer tick is smaller-- about the size of the head of a pin-- and is actually more dangerous because it transmits lyme disease.

For tick prevention, McAuley suggests using insect repellent and wearing light-colored clothing. Once you're back inside, his advice is to check for ticks in the hair line, scalp, ankles and groin.
