Evanston considers plastic bag tax

North suburban Evanston heard from its residents Tuesday night on proposals to tax or ban plastic and paper shopping bags.

Evanston's goal is to help protect the environment.

The tax suggestion would levy a 4 or 5 cent charge on each paper or plastic shopping bag. The city council didn't vote on any proposal Tuesday night.

The hearing was held so residents could give their views on whether Evanston should tax or ban shopping bags, or to reject both suggestions.
