Woman groped by 3 on street near UIC

June 2, 2011 (CHICAGO)

UIC campus police issued a community alert and are looking for three men who they say groped a female student on West 16th Street.

Investigators say the assault took place Thursday at 2:40 a.m. in the 1800 block of 16th Street. The student was walking alone when three men grabbed her from behind, groped her and tore off her blouse. Campus police and Chicago police are looking for three men between the ages of 17 and 23. Neighbors say they are also on the lookout.

"It's shocking... because I just moved here from Michigan. It seemed like a safe area. I really don't know the history about. It makes me more aware, and I should not be on the phone. I am walking with mace in my pocket," said Velvet Davis, Columbia College student.

Police say that a motorist who was passing by saw the attack, which may have saved the woman because the suspects then ran off.
