On Monday night, however, police are still searching for the driver. The accident happened on the city's West Side at about 5 p.m. Monday.
The victims were struck as they were crossing a street near Jackson and Paulina. The mother is 25 years old, and her children include a 7 year-old, a 3-year-old and a 3-month-old baby girl. ABC7 is told that all of them are in stable condition Monday night, and that none of their injuries are considered life-threatening. Three of them may yet be released late Monday night.
Police say the driver of a green Mazda SUV was going northbound on Paulina when another vehicle blew through the red light on Jackson, pushing into her vehicle, hitting a mother and her three young children who were crossing the street.
"We had victims in the crosswalk at the time of the impact from the two vehicles causing this vehicle, the Mazda, to strike the pedestrians in the crosswalk," said Chicago Police Department Investigator Elliott Musial.
Police found the alleged hit-and-run vehicle left in an alley a few blocks away, but the driver was nowhere to be found. The red Chevy Blazer is registered to a man who lives in Blue Island, but police have not confirmed the name of the driver.
Witnesses describe the driver of the red Chevy Blazer as being 5-feet-10-inches tall, weighing about 300 pounds and between 30 and 40 years old. He was wearing a gray t-shirt and black jeans. Investigators hope to find him quickly.
"We have the vehicle. We're going to process it and hopefully be able to get the offender into custody as soon as possible," Musial said.
ABC7 was told the police have a good idea of the driver they are looking for but he is not in custody. Anyone with information about the accident is encouraged to call Chicago police.
