High-fat diet may damage weight-regulating neurons

June 9, 2011

People who eat a high-fat diet and become obese may have damaged neurons in the part of the brain that controls body weight.

Researchers at the University of Washington in Seattle studied the brains of rodents for the short-term and long-term effects of eating a high-fat diet.

Those rats developed brain inflammation and damage to weight-regulating neurons.

It is not clear yet whether the neuron injury is permanent, but it may contribute to weight gain.
