A build-up of methane gas triggered an explosion in the south suburbs Tuesday morning.

The blast happened around 6 a.m. in South Holland.

The blast apparently occurred in an existing drop shaft of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District in a section that is separate from the Deep Tunnel project.

There was no fire and no one was injured, but some empty cars and buildings, including a school in an industrial area near the site, were damaged by flying debris.
