This year's first Illinois batch of West Nile virus has been discovered to the south of Peoria.

Tazewell County's Health Department found it Friday in mosquitoes in Delavan, 25 miles south of Peoria.

Infected mosquitoes transmit West Nile by biting people.

The illness is usually mild.

Symptoms include headaches, body aches, and fever.

The virus can cause serious cases of encephalitis or meningitis and even death.
