Police fatally shoot man in Humboldt Park

June 15, 2011 (CHICAGO)

The shooting happened in the same neighborhood where a 15-year-old boy was killed on his birthday just a few days ago.

Police say when officers tried to talk to Pedro Gonzalez, 21, Wednesday night near Kolin and Hirsch, he took off running. Gonzalez allegedly pointed a gun at officers who were chasing him, prompting police to shoot.

"He starts running, the gun comes out, and at that point, fearing for their safety - people don't like that term, but that's the fact - opened fire on him," said Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden.

"Ten minutes later, my wife called, crying, saying the police shot him - but there's witnesses who say he had no gun, so I don't know what the hell is going on," said Gonzalez's father, Pedro Gonzalez, Jr.

Gonzalez was killed not far from where his friend,15-year-old Jovany Diaz, was killed on Monday. Police had increased patrols in the neighborhood in the wake of Diaz's shooting.
