Groups plan news conference on teacher pay

June 17, 2011 (CHICAGO)

Several groups plan to hold a news conference to demand better teacher compensation.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel argues that teachers have gotten two types of pay raises since 2003 while students got "the shaft."

Emanuel is referring to a salary hike teachers get for an additional year of experience and any additional education they received.

Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis has warned of a long summer with the potential for a strike looming over parents and students.

Friday is the last day of school for Chicago Public Schools students.
