A portion of 36th Street was renamed ''Sam Cooke Way'' in honor of the late singer and soul music pioneer on Saturday.

His family lived in the Bronzeville neighborhood. Cooke began his career as a teenager, singing in churches. He went on to have such hits as "You Send Me," "Twistin' the Night Away" and "Having a Party."

A number of local dignitaries were there, along with Cooke's brothers David and LC. Cook County Commissioner Jerry "Iceman" Butler proclaimed Saturday "Sam Cooke Day."
