NewsViews: Japan Relief Effort

June 19, 2011 (CHICAGO)

A local group, Oak Brook-based Lions Club International Foundation, has mounted a massive relief effort. The Lions say they have 107,000 volunteers working in Japan, and have collected $11 million for aid. Every penny, they stress, helps victims; nothing goes to administrative costs.

Ken Kabira of Naperville, the foundation's group leader for membership, service activities, and public relations, is a native of Japan, and still has relatives there. He also recently returned from Japan after visiting stricken areas, and joining relief efforts.
